The biomass market in Japan is currently “heated” by the FIT (feed-in tariff Japanese version). However, the question is that the “woody biomass” procurement licensed by FIT is really sustainable?  According to the NPO Biomass Industrial Society Network, there is a possibility that the environment in producer countries of bioenergy feedstock may be further destroyed if the present FIT system is maintained, due to increasing demands of the solid biomass market. Originally, biomass should have generated sustainable renewable energy by using the excess or residue created by the wood and agriculture industries. So, what is the present situation of “solid biomass”? What kind of weight does the FIT scheme impose the public as liability? What is its future?
